Curtain Call

The action takes place on the back porch of Robert's Chicago home near the University.

Auburn's Pulitzer and Tony Award winning play, Proof, focuses on Catherine, a young woman whose mathematical promise has been sidetracked by her decision to care for her father, Robert- a brilliant University of Chicago mathematician whose bouts of mental illness interfered with his academic achievements and whose recent death ended a legendary career.  Catherine is haunted by the question of how much of her father's genius and how much of his mental instability she has inherited.

Catherine's older sister Claire arrives from New York to help pick up the pieces after Robert's death.  Claire's well-meaning but distinctly different approach to life do little to bolster Catherine's sense of her own competency.

When one of Robert's graduate students, Hal, unearths a mysterious notebook in Robert's study,  the authorship of an astonishing mathematical proof comes into question.  Is it the work of Catherine or Robert,  and if so, what does it say about their respective sanity or genius?  And what of Hal's new affections for Catherine, how can she know if he is sincere or merely looking for a way to invigorate his own lackluster mathematical career?

Proof is a mystery, it's also love story with intelligence and wit,  whose moving portrayals are punctuated with  laughter and surprises.  Most importantly, it reveals the value of trust and loyalty in the face of confusion and doubt.
